Underworld Awakening Let Loose The Hunters

The trailer is out for Underworld Awakening and it looks awesome!  watch the trailer above.

This is set after Underworld Evolution. Looks like we will get to see human hunters enter the fight between the two clans and some hints that Michael might return as the abomination.

Plot:  "Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two films, returns in her lead role as the vampire warrioress Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.

Underworld Awakening will hit theaters January 20, 2012.

Underworld - 7 Days To The Wolves Fan Video Remastered

A while back we brought to you a brilliant fan Underworld 7 Days To The Wolves Fan Video.  This amazing fan video uses 7 Days to the Wolves Nightwish - Dark Passion Play - 7 Days to the Wolves by Nightwish as the soundtrack and footage from the three Underworld movies.

John The Rogue Demon Hunter revisited his masterpiece remastering it and making the vid even better!

  • He improves the scene transitions making them seamless.
  • The timing is impeccable even the steps are now in time with the music.  In particular I love the timing with the moment latter in the video when Selene lands in the water... just spectacular!
  • There is now a juxtaposition between the intimate moments of Lucian and Sonja and the torture moments.

I, Frankenstein What Will The Movie Promise

Kevin Grevioux’s I, Frankenstein a Darkstorm Studios graphic novel will be made into a movie.  Production will begin in July of 2010 and Patrick Tatopoulos production designer from Underworld is attached to direct. They described the movie as:

I, FRANKENSTEIN is a contemporary fantasy thriller in which the original monster of Victor Frankenstein stands between the human race and an uprising of supernatural creatures determined to overthrow the world.

This comes across to me as another monster turned savior tale like Hellboy.  It does not make it a bad sounding or good sounding movie.  What are the connections to Frankenstein and the mythical implications brought forth in the original tale?

Is I, Frankenstein just associated to it’s name sake as a patchwork man that Victor puts together to help save us?  Should we expect Frankenstein to ponder it’s existence and the reasoning behind why it was created?

That aside, I’m excited about the visual promise that is given to us with Patrick Tatopoulous involvement in the project.  He has demonstrated success in translating the gothic aesthetic in movies with his work on Underworld and gives me hope that the visuals will be awesome.

What Would Underworld Four Be About?

underworld-rise-of-the-lycans.jpgThe rumors have stirred about a fourth Underworld film.  John Hlavin a writer for the Shield is tapped to write the next movie.  I have no strong feelings one way or the other about Halvin.  The question is, What Would Underworld Four Be About?

As a Prequel to Underworld

If Underworld four takes place before the events in the first two movies then I would love to see Selene’s embrace story.  We could see the height of the Lycan war as they are hunted by Vicktor and the supposed defeat of Lucian.  This would mean more Bill Nighy as Vicktor and Kate Beckinsale as Selene, a huge plus for me.

Lucian (Underworld) Image via Wikipedia

After Underworld: Evolution

Some are saying that Kate might not return, sad if true but then I would like to see a story taking place after Underworld: Evolution.  The remaining Lycan’s and Vampires have to work together to protect themselves against hunters.  The hunters could either be church backed or a secret government division either would be sufficiently threatened by vampires and werewolves.  The hunting could be due to the attention brought about from the war in Underworld 1 and Underworld 2 resulting in more people finding out about the existence of and having evidence for the existence of both vampires and werewolves.

What would you like the fourth Underworld to be about?

Underworld 7 Days To The Wolves Fan Video

Find more videos like this on Project: Shadow

Thanks to John The Rogue Demon Hunter from the community at Project: Shadow.  This amazing fan video uses 7 Days to the Wolves Nightwish - Dark Passion Play - 7 Days to the Wolves by Nightwish as the soundtrack and footage from the three Underworld movies.

I love how the entire video is like a meta contemplation by Selene about the days to come in the war with the Lycans and the causes behind the conflict that started the war in the first place.

The opening was nice.  I particularly liked the use of the text "Underworld" to help give context for those not familiar with the movies.

I really enjoyed that he features the love story that underpins the conflict both in the past and what fuels the present conflict.

Featuring Vincent is also a nice touch since he is the antagonist throughout.

Overall what a great job and a beautiful homage to the Underworld story and Nightwish.

New Underworld 3D Trilogy

The Vampire Selene
Image via Wikipedia

The new Underworld movie, now in development as a 3D release, could be the kick off for a new story arc centered around fan favorite Selene, the female vampire Death Dealer who had been an elite soldier in a centuries-long war between clans of vampires and werewolves (SCI FI Wire.).

I know I am not the only fan of the Underworld series, but there are times I feel like it.  I started jumping up and down in my chair when I read the news!

I only have one concern about this new flick, if they recast Selene... I am not sure I will be able to watch it.

Holpefully, they will get the original cast back for this movie, and carry the mythos forward.

What do you think about this?  If Kate Becksinsale doesn't return, will you watch this movie in Jan 2011?

Review of: Underworld: Rise of the Lycans

Review of:  Underworld: Rise of the Lycans Overall Rating: 9 Owner for some.

Watch The Trailer here in the P:S HQ

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is a great example of The Gothic Aesthetic with it’s gothic wardrobe, gothic architecture, gothic cinematography style, gothic visuals, and gothic storyline.  I loved this move and would watch it repeatedly, it is an owner for me.

Like many of the Underworld movies Rise of the Lycans also received a chilling welcome from many reviewers but I would attribute it to them not getting this movie.  First there are the norms who do not get the gothic culture and are reviled by it’s presence so they would hate this movie because of it’s nature.  Then there are those who are expecting this movie to be more like Underworld an action film first with vampires and werewolves in it.  This is more like Underworld: Evolution a horror film that has some action in it.

A Second-generation lycan shown in Underworld.... Image via Wikipedia

Bill Nighy portrayal of Victor was brilliant.  He is a cold, cruel man of strong beliefs , a mid-evil politician, a ruler, and yet he still has some heart when it came to a few subjects one of them his daughter.  Bill’s performance really conveyed the inner torment over the choices that his duty and beliefs drove him to make.  I was captivated at how he portrayed a nasty, evil character yet still got me to feel sad for his situation and empathetic at times.

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans tells the origin story of the centuries-old blood feud between the vampires and their slaves, the Lycans.  Around 1250 a young Lycan named Lucian falls in love with Sonja, the daughter of Viktor leader of the Vampires.  Lucian emerges as a powerful leader who rallies the werewolves to rise up against Viktor, the cruel vampire king who has enslaved them.

Exploring: Underworld Rise of the Lycans

Underworld Rise of the Lycans hits theaters Friday January 23rd 2009 and I can’t wait to see it.  I loved Underworld & Underworld: Evolution both really created an immaculate reality and set it’s self out with a beautiful Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets!gothic ascetic. Rise of the Lycans is a prequel tracing the origins of the centuries-old blood feud between the aristocratic vampires and their onetime slaves, the Lycans.   Roughly 600 years before the events in Underworld a young Lycan named Lucian emerges as a powerful leader who rallies the werewolves to rise up against Viktor, the cruel vampire king who has enslaved them. Lucian is joined by his secret lover, Viktor’s daughter Sonja, in his battle against the Death Dealer army and his struggle for Lycan freedom.

This movie promises to be great, exploring more of the Vampire v. werewolf story that was hinted at in Underworld 1 & 2.

Review: Underworld: Evolution

underworld-evolution Review ofUnderworld: Evolution Overall Rating: 10 Renter

Underworld: Evolution picks up just after the events in Underworld and explores the story of the Corvinus family.  This film is more of a horror vampire film with grittier, gorier elements and lots of thrilling moments that will make you jump in your seat.

You are probably asking why did this film get a 10 and a Renter rating?  This was done because the film was perfect thus getting a 10 but not for everyone.  People either love this movie or hate it so we recommend renting it.  Part of the dislike  is due to the fact that this sequel is different at a core level from it’s predecessor Underworld.  Underworld was a vampire action film where as Underworld: Evolution was a vampire horror film.

Review: Underworld

underworld Review of:  Underworld Overall Rating: 10  Owner

Underworld is an amazing vampire tale and a sublime experience of the ideals of the vampire world.  Watching Underworld will: peek your interest, lure you in, seduce you, and infect your mind with it’s deep, rich setting.  It left me wishing the night would never end.

The visuals were stunning.  The filming technique, setting and style all helped to lend to the immaculate reality that was established from the beginning and carried out through the end of the film.  This was even maintained through the transformation of human into Werewolf which is a difficult feat to pull off in film and they nailed it.

Underneath the city streets, amid the labyrinth of subway tunnels and gothic ruins, the Vampires and the Warewolfs are embroiled in an all-out war that has been going on for centuries.  Selene,  a beautiful vampire who hunts the werewolf’s discover that they are hunting a human Michael but they want him for none of the usual reasons.  Will Selene be able to figure out Michael’s secret in time to stop the events that have been put into motion?

Manga Review: The Tarot Cafe'

The Tarot Café is a manga written and illustrated by Sang-Sun Park. In these books, you meet Pamela, a shop owner who reads tarot cards. Not too unusual of a story. However, her clients are very unusual. After midnight, she receives visits from many patrons of the supernatural world. Vampires, fairies, dragons, magical cats, and other mystical creatures come to Pamela for a reading, some tea, and advice. There is also an underlying plot about Pamela, and how each one of these supernatural guests is to pay her in pearls from a necklace. Once she gets all the pieces, it will lead her to find out the truth about her past. You will not be disappointed by the art which is a mix of goth loli, punk, and fantasy. Each volume has its distinct style. The first volume mixes art-deco art reminiscent of Erte’ with punk images. Now anyone who can do that successfully has to be on the right track. Every character also has a very distinct and original style. Whatever story the character is telling pulls you in so that when their reading is done, you’re wondering if they could be their very own manga star.

Volumes 1-5 are excellent. Reading these, you will meet many of Pamela’s interesting guests as well as learn about the café staff and some loiterers that always hang out there. Volume 6 threw me for a loop. Pamela leaves the café in search of some deep dark secret of her past. Because it is so different than the other books, I didn’t like it at first. Judged on its own, it is an interesting story, but pulls you out of the café into unknown, sometimes confusing territory. Volume 7 reined me back in with an excellent end to the tale, taking you through the underworld and a resolution to Pamela’s secret. The art in Volume 7 is amazing. You will see the underworld and all the creatures that thrive there including pits of bodies in pain, demons, and the pretty evil ones too. Each chapter is introduced with Gustav Klimt-style art work.

The Tarot Café series is very enjoyable as a story and a must for any artist. This full series is available at Amazon.com

In Defense of Underworld: Evolution

I have read what I consider a lot of odd reviews of Underworld: Evolution this morning. It seems the plot fell on a lot of deaf ears. As a writer, I recognized the type of story this was very early on. This is what is known as a Theme as Hero story, as opposed to Hero, Idea, or Plot as hero stories which are much more common. The theme of this story is “The Importance of Blood,” whether it is blood memories or the ties of family. This is a classic theme for a vampire story, and I found it refreshing that the story emphasized the theme as the hero of the plot rather than torturing the theme into a clichéd and tired plot.

The movie is designed to perform on the level of a tone poem, through images, sounds and movements, rather than through plot and story. Theme as hero stories are meant to be experienced not watched.

Given that the first film used a plot as hero model, many might expect that of this film.

As for similarities between this film and the first one: they are meant to be poetic beats, like rhymes in a poem, or recurrent phrasing in prose.

Pay attention to interviews with the cast and crew and you will hear this in their words as well.

I am a fan of Theme as Hero stories, but I admit they must be seen as such to be enjoyed.

Super Heroes, Vampires, and Gwen Stacy, Oh My

X3: Images and Trailer on Site Images and a Teaser Trailer have been added to the X-men 3 official movie site. Beast and Angel look good, but I am concerned about how they are going to explain Jean Grey's return when the word Phoenix does not appear on the site (at least, not yet), and there is no pic of Juggernaut in his helmet. X2 was light years better than the first movie, I can only hope this one continues the improvements.

Spiderman 3 to include Gwen Stacy?

In the next Spiderman movie, we will get to see Spidey fight off Sandman, and maybe another woman? Rumor has it Sam Rami has cast Bryce Dallas Howard to play Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker's first love from the comics. I guess she will compete with Mary Jane for Peter's heart. Unfortunately, I know who wins...
