RIFT 2.1: Endless Eclipse - The Return of Regulos!

I loved Rift, and couldn’t imagine loving it more than I did.  Then they released the Storm Legion Expansion.  As fun as the game was, it is so much better now.  Here we are, a month after launch, and we get Endless Eclipse.  A new Chronicle, a new Raid (if you are into that sort of thing), and the Fae Yule Event!  Join me on Faeblight.

New John Carter Story Trailer With Rant

The new trailer for John Carter is here:

I have read a couple sad reviews of the trailer from people who have never read the books, so I  thought I would take a moment to respond.

While I am not yet convinced this is going to be a good or great movie, I take umbrage with the people who are saying that this movie is a knock off of Star Wars and Avatar...

The first Barsoom book was published in 1912.  That is all that needs to be said.  The books came first, and the movies that came after it inherited themes and imagery from it.  I know it is a lot to ask from internet folk to get their facts straight, but they need to do it.

I hope the film benefits from the technology used in Star Wars and Avatar, that will only make it a better movie, but that does not mean it copied them unless the filmmakers went off script.

Pixar's "Brave" Trailer and Poster

Pixar's 2012 movie Brave looks great.  They also have a great cast involved with Billy Connolly and Emma Thompson as just a few to mention.  It's set in a 10 century Scotland with a touch of fantasy.  Watch the Trailer above.

Plot:  Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In Brave, a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida confronts tradition, destiny and the fiercest of beasts. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor . Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin , surly Lord Macintosh and cantankerous Lord Dingwall. Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.  (Wikipedia)

Brave is scheduled for release on June 22, 2012.

I'm excited to see Conan The Barbarian my only regret is the title I wished they would have distinguished it from the plethera of other Conan movies, shows, and books with a change in the name.  Afterall there is already a move named Conan the Barbarian why not call this one Conan the Cimmerian and truely gain geek cred.

Jason Mamoa definetly pulls off the look of Conan plus Ron Perlman who is a satple for these types of movies.

After his father is murdered and village destroyed, Conan ventures into an unforgiving world where he survives as a thief, pirate, and warrior. On his path of wanton adventure and women, Conan chances upon the warlord responsible for his tribe's destruction. As he tracks Khalar Zym, Conan battles monsters, Zym's henchmen, and Marique, a powerful witch. (via Wikipedia)

stars Jason Momoa, Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang, Rose McGowan, Saïd Taghmaoui and Ron Perlman. The film is directed by Marcus Nispel, and written by Thomas Dean Donnelly & Joshua Oppenheimer and Sean Hood.

Conan the Barbarian hits theaters August 19th.

Role Models Review

Tech Wolf brought over Role Models this past weekend and we really enjoyed it.  I would give it a 9 out of 10.  A definite owner with plenty of rewatchability.

This is a great movie about fandom, passion and embracing that which makes you happy in life no matter what others might think.  Add in KISS to the mix and it rocks!

It brought back fond memories of when I hung out with members of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) and battled in arms with them.  It also brought back the nights of the Vampire LARP (Live Action Role Playing).

  • Acting:  including the child actors both Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Augie Farques and Bobb'e J. Thompson as Ronnie Shields did a great job
  • Funny and entertaining
  • Irreverent but not disrespectful
  • Fandom
  • KISS references

Plot / Story:

The world's least-likely mentors, Danny (Paul Rudd) & Wheeler (Seann William Scott) must put aside their selfish, sarcastic and party-driven ways in order to give two odd, foul-mouthed kids invaluable wisdom about life, love and heavy metal.

Battle: Los Angeles Theater or Renter?

Battle: Los Angeles is hitting the theaters 3-11-11 and thus begs the question: Theater? Renter? or don’t even care?

Before answering that we should address our expectations.  This is an alien invasion style movie this means that I don’t expect to find a thoughtful story, epic dialogue or deep characters those things are a bonus with this type of movie.

What I do expect to find is

  • Action lots of action
  • Explosions, I said lots of action including explosions so many to make Michael Bay proud.
  • Cool aliens, they should at lest visually be stunning.
  • Cool alien tech preferably attached to the action and mecha / giant killer robots a plus.
  • A fun movie

With this in mind check out the trailer below.

This movie promises lots of action, explosions, cool aliens, cool alien tech and even giant killer robots!  Not only does it have that but this is a well put together trailer which is hopefully a sign of the quality of the move to proceed.  The music is provocative and the tension is exciting.

Definitely a theater for me!

Plot / Story

For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world - Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world's great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It's up to a Marine Staff Sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they've ever encountered before.  (Wikipedia)(official site

Resident Evil Afterlife Trailer 2

Exploring: Resident Evil Afterlife Trailer 2

Second trailer is out and it helps to clarify some of the conflict that we will see between Alice and The Umbrella Corporation.  I like that there is more footage giving a different perspective on what to expect in the film, aka less of a Matrix feeling.

I want one of these...

Trailer 1

The next in the Resident Evil movie franchise has it's first trailer, watch it above.  It looks like a Resident Evil movie which is good.  This is one of the few franchises that were able to get their movies to look and feel more like the game with out looking like a bad movie.

Milla Jovovich returns to reprise her role as Alice!

The trailer is really good:  I get to see the set up for some of the boss battles.  Some teasers for what different kind of mutated enemies we will get to see and the set up for the condition of everything after the outbreak.

Resident Evil: Afterlife picks up some time after the events of Resident Evil: Extinction.  Roaming the world searching for any remaining survivors Alice enters the ruins Los Angeles.   She stumbles onto a base of Umbrella surrounded by zombies.  Finding a group of survivors hiding out She then teams up with them to help free another group being held in a prison.  Among those prisoners she finds Claire's brother, Chris Redfield.

The Borrower Arrietty Teaser Trailer

Hayao Miyazaki's worlds are breath taking and awe inspiring.  Watch the teaser trailer above for his latest movie The Borrower Arrietty.

The art work is so beautiful I can't wait until this hits the states July 17, 2010 is the release date in Japan.

The story will take place in 2010 in Koganei, western Tokyo and like the novel will revolve around a group of creatures that live under the floorboards, and where a friendship is created between a human and the borrower Arrietty.

Exploring: Up

  • I was pleasantly surprised the movie is good
  • lot of fumy moments like "squirrel" and Kevin
  • good righting
  • good directing
  • It makes a personal connection
  • The movie made me hate myself
    • I lived my life backwards did great adventures in 20's and then stopped.
    • It was a little too close to real life with all the distractions pulling me off my life course.
    • The message: just because your dreams do not get to come true you get a consolation prize stung a bit too.
  • the movie left me so depressed afterward could not even blink
  • I suspect it is not liked because Up did not provide an escape and was a downer

Up is about  78-year-old Carl Fredricksen who ties thousands of balloon to his home and sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn’t alone on his journey, since Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip.  It hits theaters May 29th.

This movie looks like Pixar fun though a little kidsy.  The trailers made me chuckle.  This looks like it might be a good family movie to go watch.  Pixar has a past record for quality, entertaining movies with good messages in them but not in a preachy manner.  If I have time I would probably watch this in the theater.

Why I give Pixar the benefit of doubt:

  • Toy Story:  watched it, loved it, owner.
  • A Bug's Life:  watched it, loved it, owner.
  • Monsters, Inc.:  watched it, loved it, owner.
  • Finding Nemo:  watched it, loved it, owner, great gifts for others.
  • The Incredibles:  watched it, loved it, owner, great gifts for others.
  • Cars:  watched it, liked it, would gladly watch it again
  • Ratatouille:  watched it, loved it, owner, great gifts for others.
  • Wall-E:  on list to watch, have been told from many sources that I would love it.

Let me know what you think.  Watch the two trailers below and in the comments will you go to see up in the theater or rent it?  If you have seen it in the theater should I go see it and why?

Exploring: Twilight

I finally rented Twilight.  It is a horrible move.  It can be summed up as awkward, boring, and the worst portrayal of vampires I have ever watched.

If only the project didn't take it's self seriously then Twilight might have made a mildly entertaining vampire spoof movie but unfortunately that was not the intent.

By Emerian Rich

  • Read Emerian Rich's full review here:
    • Sadly, seeing Twilight was NOT the thrill of a lifetime.  In fact, if I didn’t love the books so much, I doubt if I would have stayed.
    • The screen writing, or the way the high school students were directed (I can’t tell which) was very Disney sit-com style.  I can’t blame the whole cast for this, I just think the styling and direction were lacking somehow.  It was almost like they focused only on Bella and Edward and the rest of the cast was an afterthought.  Even the scenes where Bella wasn’t with Edward seemed phoned in.
    • Overall, this flick will be a must see for all teen girls in love with Edward.  It finally gives them a face to fall in love with.  As for fans not in love with Robert Pattinson, we’ll have to hope the wolves help pull the second film out of the High School Musical demographic.

The DVD is out March 17, 2009

More Twilight Fun

Early Look

Twilight will hit theaters Friday November 21, 2008 and unlike many out there I’m not eager to see it.

I started out with mixed emotions over this movie the initial trailer was not that exciting.  After watching the Twilight Final Trailer I got a little more excited about this project but mainly because of the vampire element in it.  After all I'm a sucker for vampires.  The official site looks nice and loads quickly for a movie site.

Then I learned about all of the emo mentality that infused the characters and their perspective and was totally turned off.  Sparkeling vampires in the light... wtf.

Twilight is based on the book Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1).  I tried to read the book and could not even make it past the beginning part it was horrible.  Not very promising for the movie.

This is not even a renter for me.

Let me know what you think.  Will you go to see Twilight in the theater or rent it?  If you have seen it in the theater should I go see it and why?
