ghost hunters

DVD Releases: February 23, 2010

Out this week we have four DVDs to feature:  Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, Ghost Hunters: Season Five, Part OneLEGO: The Adventures of Clutch PowersCirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant.  Do we Love It, Rent it, or Avoid Like Plague?

  • Ghost Hunters: Season Five, Part One:  Always a great show.  This set includes episodes: Betsy Ross House, Star Island, Edith Wharton Estate, Club Dead, Soul Searching, Titanic Terror, Crossing Over, Garden State Asylum, Inhuman Entity, I am Not Guilty, Civil Wars Spirits, Essex County Penitentiary.

  • LEGO: The Adventures of Clutch Powers:  This one is so weird that I couldn't pass it by without mentioning it.  I get the feel that this will watch like the lego games will play which means I will at least laugh at it.  Clutch Powers and his team of LEGO experts on their adventure from LEGO City to the Space Police prison planet to the medieval world of Ashlar where they must help the rightful heir to the King’s throne find the courage to regain the kingdom from the evil wizard Mallock the Malign. Their brick-building skills will be put to the ultimate test as they face off against Mallock’s skeleton army. Get ready for an action-packed adventure like nothing you have ever seen before, The Adventures of Clutch Powers!

  • Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant: Based on the first three books of the book series The Saga of Darren Shan Theater or Renter: October 2009 by author Darren Shan.  A fantasy-adventure about a teenager who unknowingly breaks a 200-year-old truce between two warring factions of vampires. Pulled into a fantastic life of misunderstood sideshow freaks and grotesque creatures of the night, one teen will vanish from the safety of a boring existence and fulfill his destiny in a place drawn from nightmares.  Still a renter, I've heard mixed reviews of the movie and even netflix thinks I will give it a 3.6 which is in the wild card part of the rating.

SF TV Series To Watch This Fall

Ghost Hunters
Image via Wikipedia

With so many Speculative Fiction shows and new shows coming out this fall I thought I could help sort them all out.

Currently Airing

  • Eureka (Syfy):  A fun sci-fi show.  Love it, watch it on Hulu
  • Ghost Hunters (Syfy):  Fascinating exploration of U.S. ghost stories and haunting investigation.  Love it watch it on Hulu
  • Warehouse 13 (Syfy):  A fun sci-fi show that adds a dash of paranormal into it.   Love it, watch it on Hulu

  • Glee (FOX):  loved the pilot, a nice feel good musical tale with a dash of fantasy.
  • Destination Truth (Syfy):  Loved the previous seasons can’t wait to see what Josh and the gang get into this season.  Hopefully nothing from Chernobyl bit Josh.

  • The Vampire Diaries (CW):  A vampire is in it so I have to check it out but I don’t have much hope.  I realize it is not a Twilight clone (I have been schooled on that subject, lol) yet I can only hope that it is way better then Twilight.
  • Supernatural (CW):  I’m a sucker for a paranormal show involving demon hunters so this is on my check out list because I also realize there are a lot of bad ones out there as well.
Destination Truth

  • The Forgotten (ABC): I don’t have much hope for this show, mainly I’m concerned this will turn out to be yet another show for people who don’t like sci-fi to watch.

  • Eastwick (ABC):  The trailers looks really good, they captured the essence of the movie so well in the promotional material I’m looking forward to watching it.

  • Dollhouse (FOX):  Season one rocked!!! A must see
  • Smallville (CW): I could appreciate the concept behind Smallville but until this season just didn’t care enough bout the show to want to watch it but with Callum Blue joining the cast this year I think I may start watching it.

  • The Simpsons (FOX):  If you don’t know then I’m at a loss for words.

  • Stargate Universe (Syfy):  I started out not caring much about this show, but as more came out and especially the latest trailers I’m excited to watch it.
  • Clone Wars: Rise of the Bounty Hunters (Cartoon):  Season two of George Lucas' animated Star Wars tales covering the era of the Clone Wars.  The animation style is a unique style that has been difficult for some to get into but worth it.  The story is really good though lighter because the show is marketed more towards a kid audience I have hope that the second season will get better.

  • Ugly Betty (ABC):  What an amazing retelling of the classic fantasy tale
  • Sanctuary (Syfy):  The original web series was good.  The first season was awesome so of course I’m looking forward to season two.

  • V (ABC):  I enjoyed growing up with the original show V and it is one that could use a retelling, plus Morena Baccarin.

November 7

  • Legend of the Seeker (syndication):  Season one was so good I can’t wait to see how season two unfolds.

I find it interesting that all of the speculative fiction programming out there are on either sy-fy, Fox, CW, or ABC.

What is Your Visual Ghost Apparation Experience?

Ghost-hunters-i'm-not-guiltyIn Ghost Hunters episode "I Am Not Guilty" (season 5, episode 10) we get to see captured infrared footage of a ghost! Watching it reminded me of my experience with a residual haunt I like visiting in which fully visible Civil War ghosts appear.

I want to hear about your experience with a fully visual ghost.

My Ghost Experience

My most memorable experience is also one outdoors.  I loved going ghost hunting around the old Civil War battlefields and even more I got a kick out of bringing friends along for, what I lovingly called the Gettysburg battle reenactment.

It is a residual haunting.  This made the haunt a predictable and a repeatable experience for others.  I would drive around the battlefields very late in the evening, 2-4 am.  On or near the night of a full moon this way there is more natural visible light.

The battlefield would get a low lying fog that would creep across the ground.

Starring out across the battlefield I would notice movement at first.  Then focusing in on the location of the movement forms would appear in the fog.

An entire scene from the battle of Gettysburg would manifest.  Union and Rebel soldiers clashing flashing of musket fire and then it would fade away as quickly as it appeared.

What is your experience with a visible ghost haunt?

Jay and Grant's Experience

In "I Am Not Guilty" the Ghost Hunters team are investigating Doctor Mudd's house. Jay and Grant go outside to look into the claims of Civil War reenactors encounters with full visual apparitions.

While walking around they catch a ghost on the infrared camera. It's an amazing moment which I particularly like that they have a split screen showing the infrared footage and a regular camera view.  The ghost is clearly visible  in one camera and nothing moves in front of them on the other one.  Watch a clip of the footage below.

DVD Releases: March 17th, 2009

Out this week we have six DVD’s to feature: Sword Masters: The Duel of the Century, Ghost Hunters: Season 4, Pt. 2, Twilight, Punisher: War Zone, The Spectacular Spider-Man.

  • Sword Masters: The Duel of the Century: a Shaw Brothers film.  Liu Yung and Sun Chien team to investigate the martial-art murders of a supposedly mortally wounded swordsman, only to find deception, death, double-dealings, imposters and one deadly duel after another.  I’m very curious about this film it makes me think of The Duel which rocked, plus it’s a Shaw Brothers film which any wuxia fan can appreciate.
  • Ghost Hunters: Season 4, Pt. 2:  they travel from a sanitarium which has placed 911 calls to the police -- but there is no phone in the building! -- to the most haunted ship in the U.S. Navy. Then go to a tavern in a TAPS member's own hometown where customers are heard enjoying a game of pool but the hall is closed and empty, and a home where a small child hears voices and has unexplainable scratches on his body. TAPS even goes to the plantation seen in "Interview with a Vampire" where 35 tourists all witnessed the same paranormal activity at the same instant!
  • Twilight:  I will probably rent this one I love vampire movies but i’m concerned about this one.  Read the full review here Twilight - The Movie.
  • Punisher: War Zone:  I doubt that I will see this movie.  I like Punisher and would love to see a good Punisher movie but I have little hope that this will be one.  Read the full review here Punisher: War Zone Review.
  • The Spectacular Spider-Man, Vol. 2:  these are not the show from the 90’s its a 90 minute single disc featuring the rise of the super-villains.
  • The Spectacular Spider-Man, Vol. 3:  these are not the show from the 90’s its a 90 minute single disc in which the goblin strikes

Hunting Ghosts Wright-Patterson Air Force Base

Review of: Ghost Hunters: Wright-Patterson Air Force BaseOverall Rating: 9.0 A Ghost hunters

This is an incredible episode of Ghost Hunters. The Taps team is invited to conduct an investigation at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located in Greene and Montgomery counties, eight miles northeast of the central business district of Dayton, Ohio, United States. The base is named after the Wright brothers. via Wikipedia

I love this stuff and was particularly excited to see this episode mainly for all of the hype over how this episode would show us stuff that we have never seen on film before... kind of cheesy but what can I say sometimes we should tell out skeptical side to shut up and just enjoy the ride.

When they showed the old residency building I got the impression that there was a presence looming over it and then to see... well i'm not going to spoil it for you but I will say I the hairs on both arms stood up.

This episode will show you evidence of an interactive haunting. Skeptics will still debate it but will have to go far beyond Achems razor to come up with a viable alternative theory as to what happened.

  • Exciting tangible documented things occurred
  • An Interactive Haunting

Hunting Ghosts at Fort Miflin and the Frankenstein Castle

Logo05200 Ghost hunts are really fun to watch, especially when they catch something on film and tape.

While Jason and Grant were at Fort Miflin in Philadelphia, PA, the GH encountered many Paranormal things. (see it in the Project: Shadow HQ)

I have experienced something similar to the face Grant saw once a while checking out Civil War battle fields at night. I know that shock. But the image of the man cooking at the wood stove, and the vaporous footsteps on the thermal cam still gives me chills.

The voices at the Frankenstein Castle (see it in the P:S HQ) creep me out. I really don't know that else to say about them. The events at the Frankenstein Castle made the hairs on my neck stand up because they were able to get on tape so many of the common paranormal phenomena that so many of us experience. This was a great episode with a crossover from Destination Truth.
