Exploring: Twilight

Review

I finally rented Twilight.  It is a horrible move.  It can be summed up as awkward, boring, and the worst portrayal of vampires I have ever watched.

If only the project didn't take it's self seriously then Twilight might have made a mildly entertaining vampire spoof movie but unfortunately that was not the intent.

    • Sadly, seeing Twilight was NOT the thrill of a lifetime.  In fact, if I didn’t love the books so much, I doubt if I would have stayed.
    • The screen writing, or the way the high school students were directed (I can’t tell which) was very Disney sit-com style.  I can’t blame the whole cast for this, I just think the styling and direction were lacking somehow.  It was almost like they focused only on Bella and Edward and the rest of the cast was an afterthought.  Even the scenes where Bella wasn’t with Edward seemed phoned in.
    • Overall, this flick will be a must see for all teen girls in love with Edward.  It finally gives them a face to fall in love with.  As for fans not in love with Robert Pattinson, we’ll have to hope the wolves help pull the second film out of the High School Musical demographic.

The DVD is out March 17, 2009

More Twilight Fun

Early Look

Twilight will hit theaters Friday November 21, 2008 and unlike many out there I’m not eager to see it.

I started out with mixed emotions over this movie the initial trailer was not that exciting.  After watching the Twilight Final Trailer I got a little more excited about this project but mainly because of the vampire element in it.  After all I'm a sucker for vampires.  The official site looks nice and loads quickly for a movie site.

Then I learned about all of the emo mentality that infused the characters and their perspective and was totally turned off.  Sparkeling vampires in the light... wtf.

Twilight is based on the book Twilight (The Twilight Saga, Book 1).  I tried to read the book and could not even make it past the beginning part it was horrible.  Not very promising for the movie.

This is not even a renter for me.

Let me know what you think.  Will you go to see Twilight in the theater or rent it?  If you have seen it in the theater should I go see it and why?

Exploring: Alice in Wonderland 2010

Exploring: Alice in Wonderland (2010)

[reus name="Alice In Wonderland iFrame"]

The Plot / Story:

This movie is a continuation of Alice’s adventures picking up 10 years after she has left Wonderland and forgotten the earlier visit.  She returns and learns that she must help the inhabitants to slay the Jabberwocky, the dragon who terrorizes the inhabitants of Wonderland under the rule of the Red Queen. Review

6out of 10

Overall Alice in Wonderland was good but not great.  I would own it but not rush out to get it right away.  It failed to live up to the expectations for a movie with such a gifted cast and director behind it.

Where was the wonderland in this movie?  I got the feel that Tim Burton's heart was not in the movie.  After all he gave us Batman, Beetle Juice and Nightmare Before Christmas all of which brought much wonder to the settings.  Even the animated Disney film had much more wonder to it's Wonderland.  I also had the strong feeling that this movie was focused grouped and polished too much.  This one felt more like the Lion the Witch and Wonderland than and Alice in Wonderland story.

Overall Alice in Wonderland was not bad it just should have been much better.  I will watch it again and look forward to seeing if there are missing scenes on the DVD.  I  wish they could go back and redo it, maybe give us a directors cut with feeling.

Likes

  • The Music was great
  • had some beautiful scenes
  • the Cheshire cat, Jabberwocky, red and white queen, all looked good

Concerns Addressed

  • Jonny Depp’s Mad Hatter coming across more like his Captain Jack character:  Through out most of the movie he played a brilliant Mad Hatter.  Although he did seem more like captain jack in the tea party scene this may also have been the influence from the 3D effects.
  • Tim Burton's heart was not in the film, it should have been creepier, weirder and more bizarre
  • had a focused group feel, too shiny
  • Anne Hathaway seemed unrehearsed and ill prepared which was odd for the character who would have been overly rehearsed and overly prepared
  • The ending seemed like so much claptrap, have we forgotten how to end the film.  Alice came off totally unhinged why would I trust her as a business partner

Trailer

First Impressions

Under Tim Burton’s direction I expect Alice in Wonderland to be a dark and strange trip down the rabbit hole.  The music should also be very good under Danny Elfman’s direction.  The cast involved in the project is stellar though there is concern over Jonny Depp’s Mad Hatter coming across more like his Captain Jack character.  The problem I’ve had so far is how some of the characters look from the posters and trailers, especially the Cheshire Cat who is my favorite character.  I expect some of this is due to Disney’s push to make this a 3D movie.  The pros outweigh the con’s so Alice in Wonderland is still a theater for me.

Shrek Forever After Makes Me Roar

Exploring: Shrek Forever After

Shrek Forever After made me roar with delight and giving me a chance to fall in love with the movies all over again.  This is one of the best in the series since the first.  It has been a while since I have watched a movie leaving the theater feeling great.

DreamWorks shows off their amazing animation skill.  With moments like the muscles in Shrek's hand to the nose flair when he gets literally huffing mad.  In this movie there is a noticeable leap forward in animation detail.

Shrek Forever After is a perfect movie:  A perfect date movie, A perfect family movie, even a perfect fun movie.  They strike an amazing balance between romance, drama, action and jokes.

Even the end credits are a perfect recap of the previous 3 movies!

Brilliant Funny Moments

  • "Do the roar"
  • Donkey's waffel fairy and postulating on his mutant babies.
  • A pampered Puss In Boots.
  • Roar Spit Take
  • I didn't know we could do that
  • I want and angry hat!

Touching Romantic Moments

  • Good Morning
  • "If I'm your true love then where were you when I needed you?"
  • "The Best part of the day is he got to fall in love all over again"
  • "It was you who rescued me."

Expectations

I have loved all of the Shrek movies and expect to really enjoy this as well.  I have some concerns over Rumpelstiltskin looking like a troll on the poster, what is up with that?  They address that in the movie it's a hilarious moment.

Fargo to Visit Warehouse 13

Exploring: Warehouse 13 Season 2

Season two will premier on Tuesday July 13th and run for 13 episodes this season.

Eureka Crosses Over Into Warehouse 13 crossover

Douglas Fargo from Eureka's Global Dynamics is sent to Warehouse 13 to help update its aging computer system.  A seemingly sentient computer virus is triggered which locks down the Warehouse with the team inside.

The episode is entitled "13.1" airing on August 3.

Cast

[reus name="warehouse 13 iframe"]

All of the main cast members will be returning including: Eddie McClintock, Joanne Kelly, Saul Rubinek, Allison Scagliotti and CCH Pounder.

Artie Lives!

I hope… With Saul Rubinek returning to play Artie maybe this means that he survived.  I can’t wait to see what little Warehouse toy he used that he was not supposed to have on him.

Season 2 guest stars:

  • Jewel Staite:  Little is known about her character yet just that she will appear in season two.  Via her Twitter "Got offered a lovely role on Warehouse 13. Wish I could tell you more. All I can say is, you Browncoats are gonna freak."
  • Tia Carerre:  will replace Gina Torres as Kate an agent from Pete's past who rekindles a relationship with him.
  • Paula Garces:  will play Kelly a recurring character who is a sexy, spunky, headstrong veterinarian in the Warehouse town of Univille who catches Pete's eye.
  • Lindsay Wagner:  will play an in house doctor for the warehouse its self
  • Sean Maher:  He will get a guest character but little is known as to who he will play.  I would like to see him play a Halloween episode maybe a doctor and fundamentalist who got a collector scalpel that used to belong to one Jack the Ripper and goes on a morality campaign.
  • Rene Auberjonois:  will guest star as former Warehouse agent Hugo Miller.

I'm bummed that Gina Torres may have been bumped from the role of Kate by Tia Carerre.  I love Tia and think she will rock in the role of Kate.  Hopefully Gina will get to appear as a different character.

Episodes

  • In the Warehouse town of Univille an object is transmitting increasingly dangerous scenes from old Hollywood movies. Philip Winchester plays 1950s matinee idol "Raymond St. James," the star of these movies, in roles which include a Cowboy, a Marine, a Gladiator and a Mad Scientist.  This episode description makes me chuckle and think of Charmed and Phoebe's old time movie boyfriend.

Exploring: Prince of Persia

Exploring: Prince of Persia The Sands of Time

The Sands of Time only caught a passing interest from me.  Movies based on games tend to be a hit and miss venture with most of the time being a miss.  Add to that Disney’s involvement and this project had caution written all over it.

That is until I watched the trailer.  Now I'm excited about Prince of Persia.

The effects looks good.  I like the use of a broader variety of weaponry especially the more exotic ones used by the The Hassan sins.  The trailer does a nice job of setting up the back and forth between Dastan and Princess Tamina, even if a bit cliche.

Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets!I get a Romancing The Stone, Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider kind of vibe for the film.

The Sands of Time hits theaters 21 May 2010.

Will you watch it in the theater,  rent it  or don't even care?  let me know in the comments.

The Story:

Based on the game Prince Of Persia Prince of Persia HD Movie Trailer.  Dastan is a street urchin in 6th century Persia. Adopted by the king as his heir after showing valor in battle in hopes of keeping the king’s two sons from fighting over the throne.  Dastan teams up with Princess Tamina  to rescue the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that controls time, from the hands of the villainous nobleman, Nizam.

Exploring: 9

9-poster9 is a stitchPunk, Tim Burton, movie that is in a post apocalyptic setting about the struggle of life to persevere:

The time is the too-near future. Powered and enabled by the invention known as the Great Machine, the world’s machines have turned on mankind and sparked social unrest, decimating the human population before being largely shut down.  But as our world fell to pieces, a mission began to salvage the legacy of civilization; a group of small creations was given the spark of life by a scientist in the final days of humanity, and they continue to exist post-apocalypse.  -official site

Here are 3 Good Trailers Looking at 9.  I'm very curious about this movie, the idea sounds very interesting though I have some reservations about it.

The Look

The look of the setting is inspiring but what are we to expect from a Tim Burton Film.  I just don't know about the sock puppets and the robots.  I don't know if I can relate on the emotional level needed for this film with the 9.  My hope is that in context of the entire film they won't look so unempathetic especially since we are dealing with the topics of hope and survival of humanity in the face of an apocalypse.

The Promotion

The promotion for this movie has also been a mixed bag.  I love all of the web work done, the site is a little flash heavy causing slowdown and times but it is fun and emmersive into the setting.  I love how they used the old timey clips to help entice the audience into discovering what horrors happened to create the post appolopytic setting.

I was very disappointed with the clips released though, read more here: New Clips for 9 and A Letter From a Fan.  Now that a lot of the biggest opposition robots have been shown in a lot of detail and how the 9 defeat them I have less of a reason to watch the movie.

Looking Behind The Curtain

To put on the mythic lenses for a moment, lets look at what the film has promised us.  I should expect to see the themes of:

  • run away science intending to do good but cause harm
  • the military industrial complex bringing about an apocalypse
  • robots rising up and killing off humans
  • the perseverance of the human spirit and it's amazing adaptability

What is missing from all of the materials is which side of the fence this film is supposed to fall on.  I want to see either:

  • A dark tale warning us about the dangers put forth in this film and their final depressing outcome.  In the end 9 human spirit possessed puppets are not enough to perpetuate humanity at best they could live forever to spread our names throughout history like warning beacons for future civilizations.
  • Or a tale of hope with maybe the discovery of a hidden population large enough to perpetuate the species with the lessons learned.

What I don't get is how this is a tale of good verses evil that I want to partake in.  From all of the promotional material it looks like evil has won and there is no hope for the future even if the 9 succeed in their task.  Why should I care?  That is why this is definitely a renter for I will want to see how it is pulled off but I don't know if I will watch it in the theaters.
