Renter:  At first I was excited about this Despicable Me but the trailers got old fast.  There are also several yellow flags with this project that make me cautious about watching this film.  Steve Carell is funny I really like him in the office but I have not cared for his other projects, universal studios animation project which tend to be ok and the incessant need to use 3d as a gimmick to force me into watching it in the theater and I can wait.

Theater:  I'm an old school fan of the Predator movies Exploring: Predators Trailer not so much of a fan of all the recent attempts at reboots.  That said this one looks descent they kept the jungle feel.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice:

Not Interested:  This project spits on the memory of Walt Disney.  He loved Fantasia, cherished it as his greatest achievement of merging music and visuals.  To turn part of it into a simple movie with cheep tricks and borrowed plot line from other contemporary movies is a horrible thing and I want no part of it.

Inception:

Cobb's rare ability has made him valuable in corporate espionage. In one last job, he must cause an "inception" – instead of stealing an idea, he must plant one. Christopher Nolan, the director of the movie, was quoted as saying "We don't do magic. Everything in Inception has a basis in reality, except for the technology".  (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

Not Interested:  Premise is weak, the trailer boring and worst yet Christopher Nolan is all over this project.  He is a big red flag in any project.

Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore:

The cats join forces with with the dogs and get additional support from the birds to block Galore's scheme. Galore, meanwhile, has the help of the mice and hires the devious cat and antagonist from the first film, Mr. Tinkles.  (Wikipedia) (The Official Site)

Theater / Renter:  this is probably a renter for me but as previously confessed in My Dirty Secret Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore I'm a sucker for this movie.  The first in the series was really entertaining and funny.  Based on the trailers and promotional materials it looks like the second one has not lost that flavor.

Exploring: The Sorcerer's Apprentice

Expectations:

I'm still curious about The Sorcerer's Apprentice but it this curiosity is transitioning into excitement.

On the Plus side Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets!

  • The trailer looks cool
  • It's a story of magic in modern society
  • Nicholas Cage and Jerry Brookhimer film:  the action sequences should be full of magical explosions

The movie is a live-action re-imagining of the Mickey Mouse Sorcerer's Apprentice segment in Disney's Fantasia.  I love Fantasia and this being a re-imagining creates some concerns whether they are able to pull it off.

Trailer #2

This trailer is a good intro into the movie.  They show off some of the magic and gives us an idea of what the movie is about.

Trailer #1

This one is mainly only good for additional footage like the neat mini dragon becoming a ring moment.

Review: Dead Is The New Black by Marlene Perez

newblackContrary to the promising title and cover, this is not a cute commentary on goth teen life in today's American high school.  Once I got over my expectations, I found Dead Is the New Black moderately entertaining. The story centers around Daisy Giordano, a girl who is the only "norm" in a household of witches.  Her old best friend is now the stereotypical cheer-bitch and has decided that dressing in black, wearing a gothic ankh, and carting a coffin behind her is the new "in" style.  As cheerleaders start dying, our little norm finds out there is an energy vampire in their midst.  Once Daisy begins to investigate the murders, she finds out that her town is not what it seems.  Nightshade is filled with supernatural creatures and is governed by a secret committee headed by werewolves, vampires, and witches.  They are attempting to find the killer as well.  There is a fun Disney teen quality to the book, but if you're looking for real horror, it's lacking.

Although the tale is on the young side, the world created by Marlene shows promise.  After all, who doesn't want to read about a town founded by immortals?  This is a short, quick read that is probably suited for Tweens or younger, but enjoyable enough to be read by teens and adults who like their horror on the light side.  This book is also light weight, ideal for a bring along book for summer reading, a trip to the beach, or to take on a plane trip.  As I said, Nightshade shows promise and I enjoyed the first book enough to pick up the second.  At a perfect price range, this is one of the only books selling these days under $8.

You can purchase and preview Dead Is the New Black at Amazon.com as well as it's sequels Dead Is a State of Mind and Dead Is So Last Year.

Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo U.S. Release Date!

After what feels like an eternity of watching Japanese language trailers and reviews wondering when the latest Hayao Miyazaki's latest film Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea will come to the United States, I now have the answer: August 14th 2009!

To top it off, Disney have hire a stellar voice cast for the English dub:

Noah Cyrus provides the voice of a baby goldfish named Ponyo who desires to be a human, and gets her wish. She runs away from her home in the sea and befriends a five-year-old human boy named S?suke voiced by Frankie Jonas. Other cast members include Cate Blanchett, Matt Damon, Tina Fey, Cloris Leachman, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin and Betty White (/Film).

My anticipation has just shot into overdrive!  I cannot wait until August!

Disney Actually Moves Forward

51 cOXs5q8L._SL210_Review of Meet the Robinsons Average Overall Rating: 10

Brian: Technical Rating: 9.9

Gut Rating: 10

My expectation for this movie was very low. Reason one: when I saw the preview I chuckled but figured it to be a renter. Reason two: this was a Disney project and well we all know how bad the recent batch of Disney movies have been. If only I would have remembered-

Around here, however, we don't look backwards for very long.

We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we're curious... and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.

Keep moving forward.

Walt Disney

I must say I was absolutely thrilled and pleasantly surprised by this movie. The story is based on a book by William Joyce A Day With Wilbur Robinson. This is 61284PA6W0L._SL210_defiantly an owner and highly recommended for both adults and children alike.

The movie is about an orphan boy who grows tired of doing adoption interviews and getting turned down. He has a gifted, creative mind and tinkerer temperament. He decides that the Ideal parent who would want him would be his birth mother so he sets out to learn who his real mother is. He sets out to invent a machine that will unlock his memory of his mother but a mysterious bola hat villain interferes.

Likes

  • a great uplifting story: The story left me with a warm feeling, motivated and inspired to do and be more at the end something that is sorely lacking in our modern media.
  • Good message of keep moving forward, learning from your mistakes, and being mindful of those around you. This was a nice plus especially for entertainment geared toward children. They don't get preachy with the morally uplifting messages but instead show you them in action.
  • attention to details and continuity: This was absolutely fun for the second watching to see if they included in little events but since I do not want to spoil any plot points I can not say more to that point. Trust me you will come to the same conclusion after watching.
  • Redemption of the Villain character

Dislikes / Concerns

  • Kidsey: This movie was intended for a children audience so knowing this I did not take points away that would be silly but I felt it still should be said. Even though it was a bit childish it was still an excellent tale that as an adult I could enjoy.
