Exploring The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor

Review of:  The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor Overall Rating: 9.5

Watch The Trailer in the P:S HQ

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor is everything one could expect and hope for in a Mummy movie!  This was a fun, thrilling, adventure tale that takes us around the world.  They maintain the brilliant sense of humor that is in the previous mummy movies.  I was pleased to see a movie with really nice looking animation that was not done by ILM, it gives me hope for the future of animation effects and characters.

Earlier in the day before we watched the movie I was joking about a possible way as to how they would resolve Rachel Weisz not coming back to play Eve.  I put forth the idea that maybe Rick would have to explain to Alex that his mommy would not be joining them on their adventure this time because she had discovered a new book store in Diagon Alley and would not come home.  We all had a good laugh until the movie started and I sat paralyzed in my seat as we see Eve in a book store doing a reading of her Mummy book.  She is asked if she is the same character as in the book and answers "I can assure you I am an entirely different person." This was a nice tie in to reality and really helped to ease the audience into the story.  Maria Bello did a good job with the character of Eve and thankfully they did not relegate eve to a small roll to try to cover up the actress change.  I also enjoyed that eve retains her combat prowess that she obtained in The Mummy Returns.

The chemistry amongst the O'Connell family is believable and compelling.  The moments between Rick and his son Alex are touching and hilarious.  They take an appropriately short amount of time to fill in the audience with what the family did in the time between the end of The Mummy Returns and the beginning of this adventure.

The acting was good but has some week points and the same goes for the writing.  That being said it's a Mummy Movie and an adventure tale the expectation should be weighted on the action sequences and the adventure.  This movie hit those notes perfectly!  A must see in the theaters and definitely an owner to put on the shelf next to my other Mummy movies.

The Plot / Story: The ruthless Dragon Emperor (Jet Li) and his 10,000 warriors are double crossed by a sorceress (Michelle Yeoh). Trapped in suspended animation and forgotten for eons until Alex O’Connell (Luke Ford) gets tricked into awakening them. Alex then turns to the only people who knows a lot about stopping the undead: his father Rick O’Connell’s (Brendan Fraser), mother Evelyn (Maria Bello) and Evelyn’s brother Jonathan (John Hannah).

Rick must combat the resurrected Han Emperor to stop his quest for world domination. As they engage in a race from the catacombs of ancient china into the frigid Himalayas.

Stars: Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello, John Hannah, Luke Ford, Michelle Yeoh, Isabella Leong, Russel Wong

  1. "Spank my ass Rick!"
  2. The father / son interaction
  3. Eve's awesome moves
  4. Jet Li & Michelle Yeoh
  5. The Yeti, OMG The Yeti!
  6. The effects looks great
  7. Their use of having Eve be the author of two Mummy books.

Dislikes / Concerns

  1. Wished the fight between Jet Li & Michelle Yeoh could have been either more or longer.
  2. acting & writing could be better
  3. The Yeti showed the continuing limitations for computer generated fur.

Exploring: The Mummy Returns

Get your copy of The Mummy Returns here Review of:  The Mummy Returns Overall Rating: 9

The Mummy Returns, sequel to The Mummy, is also an adventure tale in the vein of the 40's 50's swashbuckler movie.  They really strike a nice balance between the action, comedy, and thriller moments.  I absolutely loved the character Izzy Buttons.  In this sequel they fill in the rest of the story between Anck-Su-Namun, Imhotep, Pharaoh Seti I, Princess Nefertiri, and the Madji warriors.  They really do a great job with the Scorpion King which in turn left me wanting to know more about the story of that character.  This is a delightful sequel film and a wonderful follow up to The Mummy.

The Plot / Story: The Scorpion King with his army looses a decisive battle and is forced to retreat into the desert to die.  Instead of giving into death he swears and oath to Anubis to lead his army.  After succeeding Anubis' campaign the Scorpion King and the army vanish.  Five Thousand years later, Evie and Rick O'connell are exploring along with their Son Alex find the bracelet of Anubis and begin the seven day countdown to the awakening of the Scorpion King and Anubis' army.  Meanwhile Meela Nais, the reincarnation of Anak-Su-Namun, resurrects Imhotep with hopes to defeat the Scorpion King and to take control of Anubis' army.  Now Evie, Rick, Alex, and the Medjai warriors must race against time to stop the Scorpion King, Anubis' Army and Imhotep.

Starring:   Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, Arnold Vosloo, John Hannah, Patricia Velásquez, The Rock, Oded Fehr

  1. Dwane Johnson makes for a perfect Scorpion King
  2. great sense of humor
  3. The balance between action, comedy, and  thriller
  4. The swashbuckler style of the movie
  5. nice story
  6. They Give Rachel Weisz a more prominent role in this movie

Dislikes / Concerns

  1. They continue the use of Imhotep's name for a villain
  2. They continue to have issues with Egyptian Mythology
  3. The effects were not up to par even with the original

Exploring: The Mummy

Get your copy of the Mummy here Review of:  The Mummy Overall Rating: 9

The Mummy is a wonderful adventure tale in the vein of the 40's 50's swashbuckler movies.  I really enjoy watching this film for it's great sense of humor, mystery, and suspense.  The movie opens up with the back story for Imhotep setting up the tragic love story that led the character to become cursed and establishes his motivations.  The film has a great pace.  Though they use names and events from history they take great liberty with the actual historical accurateness.  This is definitely an owner.

The Plot / Story: High priest Imhotep is forced to undergo the cures of the Hom Dai for having an affair with the Pharaoh's wife  murdering the Pharaoh and trying to resurrect her from the dead.  For three thousand years Imhotep was laid quietly at Hamunaptra until Evie Carnahan accidentally wakes him up.  Now they must find a way to stop the mummy Imhotep before he can unleash a wave of destruction and death upon the earth.  For More

Starring:  Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo

  1. the portrayal of the Americans made me laugh
  2. the sense of humor
  3. the swashbuckler style
  4. the effects look really good

Dislikes / Concerns

  1. they use the name of Imhotep for the villain when there are other historical Egyptian names that would have been more appropriate.
  2. seem to have a lack of knowledge about Egyptian mythology
  3. the mummy visits the same curses on the people as Moses so are they saying Moses is a mummy?
