Clearing Up the FUD: Watchmen Sequel

The opportunity exists for a Watchmen Sequel.  The actors and actress are already contractually bound and rights are already owned.  Read more at /film for the details.  So it could be done. Should it be done?

Watchmen as a work has such a completeness to slap a sequel onto it would do the entire project a injustice.

If Alan Moore were to do a sequel I would love to see something like this.  Use the same setting, make it a generation latter and update the underlining message to match some of the greatest global threats that we face.

Do you think a sequel should be done?  What would be our current doomsday clock?

DVD Releases: July 21, 2009

Out this week we have five DVDs to feature:  Watchmen (Director's Cut), An Empress and the Warriors, Stargate SG-1: Children of the Gods, Coraline, G.I. Joe A Real American Hero: Season 1.1.watchmen-dvd

  • Watchmen (Director's Cut): This is an amazing movie and a great gritty look at our society's social political position and a great adaptation of comic to movie.  I'm even more excited to see the director's cut where I have hopes they will fix some minor issues I had with the film over the comic.  watch the trailer below.
  • An Empress and the Warriors:  A wuxia film with a great cast and fascinating premise with a woman leading an army of men in feudal China... that I'm going to have to rent.  Watch the trailer below.
  • Stargate SG-1: Children of the Gods:  This is a re-release of the pilot for the great show Stargate SG1.  This version has some extended scenes.  They removed the nudity that was in the original version since Showtime wanted it in there and it leaves the pilot not as family friendly as they wanted it to be.  Christopher Judge also dubbed over some of his parts to help give more consistency to Teal'c.
  • Coraline:  I have heard good things about this movie and did not get a chance to watch it in the theaters so now it's on my rent list.  For more on Coraline read here. watch the trailer below.
  • G.I. Joe A Real American Hero: Season 1.1:  I grew up watching this show so I'm stoked that it is now getting released on dvd.  This is not the complete first season which would be a big negative against this dvd set but this one has a bunch of stuff in it for it's price of 20 bucks.

DVD Releases: March 24th, 2009

Out this week we have five DVD’s to feature:  Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter & Under the Hood, Star Wars: The Clone Wars - A Galaxy Divided, Snakehead Terror, 1st Bite, Leaves' Eyes - We Came With The Northern Winds - En Saga I BelgiaWatchmen_Tales_of_the_Black_Freighter

  • Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter & Under the Hood: I’ve been excitedly waiting for the release of this animated tale.  It features Tales of the Black Freighter which was the comic that was being read within the Watchmen storyline.  Along with that tale they included a live-action/CGI Under the Hood, based on Nite Owl's powerful first-hand account of how the hooded adventurers came into existence. Two fan-essential stories.
  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars - A Galaxy Divided:  The first four episodes of the animated television series.  Although I loved the episode Ambushed I don’t see buying this when latter in the fall they will release the entire season as a set or I could just get the show through Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Star Wars: The Clone Wars now and not have to wait. For more on Clone Wars and reviews of episodes read here. For more on A Galaxy Divided read here.
  • Snakehead Terror: A bad monster movie that is so bad it’s worth watching.  a Sci-Fi original but it features Bruce Boxleitner.
  • 1st Bite: I have not watched this one and would love to know if it is good if any of you have watched it but after reading the description I might have to rent it.  By the way it’s not a vampire flick but it is a supernatural horror-comedy hybrid.  Shaken by the apparent food-poisoning death of a customer, Canadian chef and restaurateur Gus undertakes a pilgrimage to Thailand, where a mysterious woman shares with him the otherworldly secrets of Thai cooking. But when Gus returns to Montreal, he discovers that the cooking secrets he thought were a blessing may be a terrible curse.
  • Leaves_Eyes_We_Came_With_The_Northern_WindsLeaves' Eyes - We Came With The Northern Winds - En Saga I Belgia: This is a must own.  Double DVD digipak edition with 4 hours of material including the concert film, a 2-hour band documentary and much more. Review: Watchmen

watchmen Review of:  Watchmen Overall Rating: 10

Watchmen is a brilliant and great example of how a movie can stay true to a story, be artful and free of bone idle Hollywood pandering.  I loved it and will watch it over and over again.  Everyone should watch this movie it will enrich their lives and make them think.  That said there are also some warnings.  It does not have a happy ending.  It does not have likable characters.  It will make you think.  Watchmen is not the film to watch if one is expecting a light or fun movie but it is a great film.

The Messages in the Watchmen:

  • costs and consequences of actions and in actions
  • why we need to be careful about what we really want and how that might effect our society as a whole
  • How each individual’s actions not only impacts themselves but the society as a whole for better or worse.

Final prognosis:  Go see it, take your friends, give yourself time to discuss the experience, watch it over and over again, it will enrich your life but if your seeking something fun then wait don’t go see it.

  1. The overall experience was a brilliant and thoughtful exploration of the human condition which makes us think about ourselves and our society.
  2. Afterward I was left thoughtful and reflective glad that our society didn’t walk down that path.
  3. visuals were stunning
  4. The music was perfect and the same from the comics.
  5. The setting looked like it came right from the pages of the comic they took great care to get everything to look good.
  6. blood and guts were at an appropriate level for the type of film but there are a couple of places it’s pushed a little far.
  7. I really enjoyed the pace for an almost 3 hour movie it didn’t feel like I was there for 3 hours.  I’m not even sure if I even blinked.
  8. The acting and casting was spot on.
  9. They stayed true to the comic with a few minor changes added 3 scenes and I was bummed there was no squid monster but with those changes the overall story was unchanged and the messages were unchanged.
  10. they kept most of the flashbacks in the film.  A few minor characters were cut but nothing to change the film from the book.
  11. I wished that the story of the black freighter was left in movie but I understand it being cut for time reasons and it helped to keep the story from becoming preachy or too dark.
  12. I was enriched and glad for the experience of the Watchmen.
  13. I was amazed that they were able to pull off nudity and sex scenes without it  becoming pornographic.
  14. loved playing “where in the world is Walter” game, that is trying to find him and Pyramid in every scene.

Dislikes / Concerns

  1. I’m concerned that the typical American audience member will not be able to handle a dark story without a happy ending that will make them think about themselves and the society they are creating.
  2. They changed Rorschach from a sociopath into a psychopath by changing they way he kills the guy.  I found this bothersome because it changes some of the psychology behind the character and I don’t understand why they made that choice.
  3. I’m concerned that the audience won’t get that this is progressive speculative fiction since the characters are  not likeable and a society that is not likeable.  What makes this progressive is that the Watchmen makes the audience think about how they are interacting with their society and how the watchmen is put forth as a warning of what path not to go down.

The video above shows Dr Manhattan really floating over the river Thames.  To celebrate the London premiere of Paramount Pictures projected a 70 foot tall Dr Manhattan onto a water screen:

The water screen, moored especially for this occasion in the middle of the Thames between the London Eye and The Shell Building, created an enormous vertical screen of water that extended to 72 feet in height and 100 feet across (/Film).

Review: Watchmen Motion Comic

Review of:  Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic Overall Rating: 10    Watchmen - Watchmen Motion Comics

get your copy of Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic here and help support the project

The Watchmen Motion Comic is an amazing compelling experience to watch!  I really enjoyed it.  This is a direct translation of the comic from book to an audio video format.

For those out there who might be concerned that the movie will be too baroque to be understood this is a great opportunity to understand and experience the Watchmen as it was originally intended.

If you would like to learn more about what a motion comic is read my post on Exploring: Motion Comics

The visuals are pulled right from the pages of the comics which are just stunning.  When I started watching the motion comic I got lost in the art work.  Just sitting there mouth slightly a gape with eyes stuck on the screen, a pure moment of static arrest.

The motion for the visuals are done mainly with camera zooms and panning.  That said they also use a lot of actual movement within a panel and Rorschach’s mask does move but remains true to the expression that he would have for the respective panels.

The audio part of the motion comic is brilliantly read.  He reads all of the parts which for those not familiar with the medium can be a little confusing at first.  This is easily overcome with the amount of emotional acting and personality that is brilliantly captured for each character so as he reads them they have a distinct feel and style that is also true to the characters.  He actually got them to sound as I thought they would sound in my head!

To get a good feel for what the motion comic looks like watch this video of the Watchmen movie trailer redone in a motion comic style.  While I do not believe that the visuals are cut directly from the motion comic I would not be surprised to find out that they were.

The motion comic consists of 12 chapters about 30 min long totaling 5 hours of awesomeness!

It is now available on iTunes Watchmen - Watchmen Motion Comics which is how I got it and on Tuesday March 3rd they will release the DVD copy which can be picked up here Watchmen: The Complete Motion Comic.

Watchmen: Operation Wrath of God

Dr Manhattan

This is a picture of Dr. Manhattan on day one of Operation Wrath of God in Vietnam.  It looks really good.  I’ve enjoyed a lot of the material being trickled out by the people on the Watchmen Film.

They have also released the official poster for the movie.  Unfortunately the movie poster doesn’t that great and it doesn’t elicit a desire to run out and watch the movie.  Not that I need one, but movie posters should and this one doesn’t.

I would have liked it more if they had gone for more of a look from the minute men picture.

Watchmen Movie is Back On

watchmen-minutemen-1-thumb.jpgWarner Brothers and Fox have reached come to an agreement and will present their settlement to Judge Gary Feess Friday morning.  Watchmen will open as planned on March 6th.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but the deal is said to involve a sizable cash payment to Fox and a percentage of the film's boxoffice grosses; Fox will not be a co-distributor on the film, nor will it co-own the "Watchmen" property, but it will share in revenue derived from it.

Relieved that they were able to come to an agreement I look forward to watching the movie.

Watching the Watchers: Minutemen Featurette

Watchmen released a really neat featurette discussing the characters and the creation of their design.  They talked about the minute men and show off each one.  They look awesome!  Watch the featurette here. If you are still reading and haven’t already clicked through to watch the video I have included some of the characters shown in the video just to excite you more!

Dave Perillo's Watchmen

One of my favorite artists has taken on one of my favorite comics: DrMan NiteOwl

I have commented at length about the beautiful simplicity of his style, but these pics for the Philly Cartoon Society tribute to the Watchmen are just beyond gorgeous.

I wish they were available to purchase.
