Review: Doors Of Chaos

Doors of Chaos is my new manga love. I happened upon it by accident while on vacation in Los Angeles visiting a store called Anime Love. This new manga by Ryoko Mitsuki is about twin sisters who control the four doors that protect their world from descending into chaos. Clarissa is the key to open the doors. Mizeria is the key to close the doors. On their “coming of age” day, their guardian and teacher, Rikhter, kidnaps Clarissa and begins to open all the doors through which demons pour through. Mizeria, the sister left behind, is suddenly introduced to a race of people who have been sent to protect her. She is completely confused. She thought she was the less powerful sister and that Rikhter was noble. She soon finds that he is using her sister Clarissa for his own gains and that Mizeria is the only one who can stop the destruction of her world.

This manga’s art stays true to the intricate goth loli style. The girls are clad in multiple petticoats and long hair in ribbons with elaborate tattoos trailing all over their pale skin. The men of this world are clothed in a mix of traditional Victorian frock coats with ascots and French Renaissance breeches with knee boots. The other worldly creature that comes to protect Mizeria is more of an anime waif with bandages like Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion. He wears what looks to be animal skins, chains, and sports the same sort of tattooing that the girls do. There’s also a freaky guy cloaked in what can only be called a trenchcoat length straightjacket.

The art in this manga is top shelf. If for no other reason, pick this up to stare at the excellent artistic style of this manga. It doesn’t have much of those annoying reiterations that some anime books have when the chapters switch. The story is good and the dialog makes sense. There is a touch of the slave fetish in this book as well as very mild nudity. Demons are a touch gorier that normal, but violence is nothing out of the common way.

I recommend this manga for any anime reader and one of the few I would read a traditional novel about.

Clocks, keys, demons, and an excellent story, what more can you ask for in a manga?

DreamCypher, the new album by the Cruxshadows

The new Cruxshadows CD came out today, I look forward to listening to and reviewing this album. The Cruxshadows are a bit pop for me, but in the wasteland of new Goth music, they are probably one of the best goth bands that are still making music.I must say, I love the cover, and the first single.

Andreas Katsulas Dies

C.E. Dorsett A great light has gone out:

Andreas Katsulas, the character actor known to SF fans as G'Kar on Babylon 5 and a familiar face from Star Trek and other SF&F TV shows, died Feb. 13 of lung cancer in Los Angeles, his agent, Donna Massetti, confirmed to SCI FI Wire. He was 59 (SciFi Wire).

The heart of the man fell silent, but he will be remembered. He was one of the best actors we had. Sorry, I am kind of choked up about this. My prayers go out to his friends and family.

Direct to DVD Star Trek Project

Join Trek United's campaign to bring new Star Trek episodes to DVD!

Variety notes that unlike many studios who limit original DVD releases to projects acquired by outside producers, Paramount will develop and produce its own projects. Pittleman said that the facilities mirror the theatrical division, though most of the studio's DVD movies are shot in 21 days.”

Paramount’s production facilities could easily turn out an Enterprise direct-to-DVD movie or mini-series and have it available for the September 8, 2006 Anniversary.

Our project will entail sending either postcards or DVD cases to Paramount’s around the world. The DVD cases ideally would have a cover label and would be sent in plain business mailer. It is the best way to get by the mailroom (Trek United).

This is a good idea as long as Rick Berman, Michael Piller, Jeri Taylor, and Brannon Braga have nothing to do with it! I think we should make it clear that we want Majel Barrett-Roddenberry or maybe even Rod Roddenberry... David Gerrold... D.C. Fontana... Anybody but the idiots that have been involved.

The main target for this campaign would be:

Mr. Thomas Lesinski President Paramount Home Entertainment Inc.

5555 Melrose Avenue Los Angeles CA 90038 United States

We should also include our two CEO’s

Mr Tom Freston Viacom International 1515 Broadway New York NY 10036 USA

Mr Leslie Moonves Viacom, Inc. 7800 Beverly Blvd Los. Angeles, CA 90036-2112 USA
