Jack Black

DVD Releases: October 6, 2009

[reus id="21"]

Out this week we have three DVDs to feature:  The Guild: Seasons 1 & 2, Year One, and Red Dwarf: Back to Earth.

  • The Guild: Seasons 1 & 2: The Guild is hilarious, geeky, fun! Fans of RPG's and MMORPG's will love this show. I first got into it because Felicia Day rules and am not let down. The guilds actual release was on September 29th but I did not want to miss this one. A great example of an independent production The Guild is a must own.  Watch a music video "Date My Avatar" from the Guild to get an idea of how funny this show is.

  • Year One: Banished from their primitive village after the tribe elders deem them too lazy, Zed and Oh embark upon an adventure-filled journey through the ancient world.  Being a Jack Black movie sparked my interest in Year One.  The trailers looked funny and now I can rent it.  If you have watched Year One let me know what you think about it.

  • Red Dwarf: Back to Earth: I love Red Dwarf. I started watching it on PBS as a child and have really enjoyed watching it now on DVD.  For those just getting into Red Dwarf you should really start back at the beginning since the impact and probably several jokes will be lost like Lister getting to finally go back to earth to get his Island home on Fiji.  I haven't watched Back to Earth but eagerly await to rent it.

Exploring: Year One

year-one-posterYear One is a Jack Black adventure, comedy, alternate history movie.  When a couple of lazy hunter-gatherers are banished from their primitive village, they embark on a journey through their ancient world. Along the way, they encounter Adam and Eve, Cain and Abe, and Abraham. I like Jack Black and find most of his movies to be very entertaining in their least.  The premise of Year One did not excite me nor intrigue me yet the trailer did make me laugh.

This is a renter and I suspect could even be a good movie.  I'm wondering if it will be just fluff or if this will be like Kung Fu Panda and have great messages, be entertaining, make me laugh and just all around be an edifying experience.

Let me know what you think.  Will you go to see Year One in the theater on June 19, 2009 or rent it?  If you have seen it in the theater should I go see it and why?

Review: Kung Fu Panda

Get your copy of Kung Fu Panda here through amazon and help support the project Review of:  Kung Fu Panda Overall Rating: 9

Kung Fu Panda really impressed me with how edifying it is.  there are tons of valuable messages yet it was not preachy.  This movie is entertaining and funny I could not stop laughing.  This animated movie is an owner.

Kung Fu Panda is about Po a panda bear that is recruited by a team of Kung Fu masters to help protect the Valley of Peace from an evil snow leopard.  Starring: Jack Black, Ian McShane, Angelina Jolie.

The Wisdom of Master Oogway

  • “There are No accidents.”
  • “You are too concerned with what was and what will be.  Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery but today is a gift that is why it is called the present.”
  • “Let go of the illusion of control.”
  • The secret of all masters… is in the movie you have to watch it (no spoilers he he)

Likes

  1. Good pace
  2. Great story: with a strong underdog / dreamer rising up to overcome the challenge theme to it.
  3. Nice animation not outstanding but there were some really cool effects.
  4. Good acting:  I really felt the emotions from the voice talent behind the animated characters
  5. Cool use bullet time
  6. I loved Master Oogway
  7. I love the use of the peach tree and especially the symbolic scene with the falling blossoms.
  8. I really liked the wisdom of Master Oogway
  9. The great Zen way of teaching great lessons without teaching the audience.

Dislikes / Concerns

  1. I was concerned before watching the film that this movie was going to be stupid funny, not bad but one note.  To my delight Kung Fu Panda is so much more!
  2. It’s petty but I kept getting stuck mentally on the fact that Po being a panda has a father who is a duck!  I actually found it funny yet my mind kept getting hung up on it.  It has no bearing on the quality of the film and is not out of the ordinary for this type of move.  It’s just a little funny thing that got me really excited latter when I expected a big reveal latter on in the movie that I thought I should share.

Gulliver's Travels with Jack Black

Book cover of Book cover via Amazon

Are you ready for a contemporary re-imagining of Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels?

Twentieth Century Fox is moving forward with a film version of the book, this time with Jack Black playing the titular character. Shark Tale director Rob Letterman will be taking up directorial duties. Shooting will begin in March, with a screenplay by Nicholas Stoller and Joe Stillman (/Film).

At first, I was not excited about it, but then my unexplainable love for Shark Tale took over, and now I am a bit giddy.  I am not sure if this will be dramatic Jack or comedic Jack, but I can really see him getting assaulted by Lilliputians.
