Masters of the Universe Movie is back on after Columbia Pictures / Escape Artists picked up the rights after Warner Bros dropped the project last year. I love He-Man and the Masters of the Universe show and would like to see a big screen adaptation. If you have not watched He-Man then check it out streaming online here.
Mike Finch and Alex Litvak pitched their concept for the project and are now building it from the ground up.
“attempted to balance a treatment that would convince the studio it was cinematic and keep the toy company satisfied that its characters were being portrayed appropriately”
I hope that they bring in J. Michael Straczynski for a consultant on this project. It was in large part his brilliant writing that made the original show so great. The movie would benefit greatly from his contribution.
Joe is a gifted writer who has many, many brilliant TV and Comic projects. He-Man, She-Ra, The Real Ghostbusters, The New Twilight Zone, Jake and the Fatman, Murder, She Wrote, Walker Texas Ranger, Babylon 5, and Jeremiah to just name a few of his TV projects.
Superman has now become interesting. Batman is way better then Superman but with Straczynski behind him I suddenly find myself interested.
I’m hoping this change will be the gateway into getting a Wonder Woman movie.
Now if the studios will only hold off on the Superman rewrite project waiting for Straczynski to guide them.
Forbidden Planet is a sci-fi classic from 1956 that helped to set the standard. Upon hearing of a remake I grew concerned that it too would be messed up but my faith was restored knowing that J. Michael Straczynski is behind the project.
Now Straczynski spoke on the project and what he is doing in the remake. He is going to stay true to the original but with some touchups.
“There’s a little more action, but it’s still a strong character piece, because it’s based on The Tempest and the idea of a father whose daughter is being courted by, in the original play, sailors that are washed up on shore. You need to have that dynamic still in place to respect the original and the source material. So there’s a fair amount of talking, but there’s some really cool action pieces in it as well.”
“We’ve actually decided to show more of the first ship when it first arrived 20 years earlier to sort of counterpoint what’s happening in the present story. If you’re a fan of the original, as I am, and have always been, I think it’s very faithful to that.” –Straczynski
I like the idea of a remake
The story is great in the original and am glad to hear he will stay true to it
The visuals and effects would benefit greatly from modern cinema technology
I like that we will get to see more of the first ship.
Warner is so excited over the current project there is talks of a sequel. This is also good news giving me hope that Warner won’t pull the project before it finishes.

I'm on draft two of Forbidden Planet, and the process is going well, very exciting stuff, and I hope I can talk about some of that in more detail soonish (JMSNews).
While I am not a big fan of remakes, if anyone could make this movie right, it's Joe. Rumors persist that the new Forbidden Planet will be a trilogy explaining what happened to the Krell. I cannot wait to learn more.
World War Z
About to make the final touches to World War Z, then with any luck we can get this thing into pre-productoin also soonish (JMSNews).
I am a little tired of Zombie movies. The book was good and the audiobook was better. I am curious how they are going to do the film.
Draft One of Lensman is in, now working on draft two (JMSNews).
The Lensmen is E. E. Smith's Space Opera masterpiece which defined an entire genre. The very notion of the creator of Babylon 5 working on what will hopefully be to first film in the series makes me as giddy as a kid on Christmas Eve. Note to Hollywood: Green light this film!
There have been a couple of previews for Ninja Assassin, and the audience scores have been just terrific. I have a suspicion that this is going to do very well (JMSNews) .
This is the next film from the Wachowski brothers who made The Matrix, V for Vendetta, and Speed Racer. Need I say any more?
The pilot script for Last Words has gone in to Dreamworks, and they're very very pleased with the script. So we'll see where this goes (JMSNews).
Wait a minute... Joe + Dreanworks + pilot = awesome series I need to see.
Interestingly, due to all the writing work, I've lately begun to be offered directing gigs, most of it in the SF genre (natch). Nothing has grabbed me enough yet to want to tackle it, but we'll see what the future holds. A couple of studios have extended the offer for me to write and direct my own stuff, which is pretty cool.
My agent has forbidden me to take on any other screenplay assignments until March/April, but some projects have begun to circle Casa Straczynski of late, looking for an open place to land when an opening comes. Some very cool stuff on the horizon (JMSNews).
Anything I get from Joe, I am ready to go. Great news all around.
Patrick McGoohan, a two-time Emmy Award-winning actor who starred as a British spy in the 1960s TV series "Secret Agent" and gained cult status later in the decade as the star of the enigmatic series "The Prisoner," has died. He was 80 (Los Angeles Times).
I think J. Michael Straczynski said it best: "The world has suddenly become a far less interesting place."
He-Man the classic animated TV show from the 80’s now has the first season streaming free online on Hulu.
The show is about Prince Adam who is given the Sword of Grayskull and can transform into He-Man defender of Eternia from Skeletor who wishes to rule all of the land. Along his adventures Prince-Adam is accompanied with his pet a cowardly tiger named Cringer who also transforms into an armored tiger named Battle Cat. Eternia is also defended by Prince Adam’s mentor Duncan aka Man-At_Arms, his friend Teela, and the wizard Orco.
Skeletor also has his entertaining band of misfit baddies which he uses not only in his attempts to rule all of Eternia but also to help him get at the secret powers hidden deep within Castle Grayskull.
The shows are great fun with a fable type quality to them containing wonderful messages for life like being brave and how lying can be harmful. The show ran for two seasons before going off the air. The show had some great writing talent like J. Michael Straczynski, Paul Dini, and and David Wise giving He-Man a great storyline to it.
That report is totally incorrect. It's not going to be retro, and it's not going to be a continuation. When Altair 4 blows up, it blows up. I have, however, found a way to honro [sic] the original movie without in any way besmirching it in order to do this iteration. Once folks find out what we're actually going to do, I think they'll be most pleased. Forbidden Planet remains one of my favorite films of all time, and I wouldn't even think about doing this project if I didn't think there was a way to do it that would not in any way diminish the original...which is why this is the the first development in years to actually get to the script stage. Everybody involved is very excited by the approach (JMSNews).
It feels like he is wiping grease off of a mirror, but he at least cleared up the rumors that the new film was going to be a campy send up of the original. I trust Joe, and believe he will do a great job remaking a great movie.
Changeling is promising to be a nice cerebrally scary movie. It’s a thriller about a mother who finally gets her child back from an abduction and then suspects that the child returned to her is not her son. It promises to play off of the fear of loosing a loved one and the fear of the stranger in ones house. The idea is intriguing but what really sold me on this movie and made it a theater are the people involved. Watch The Trailer here in the P:S HQ
Written by J. Michael Straczynski who is a master at his craft especially when writing drama, thriller, suspense, and speculative fiction. Directed by Clint Eastwood, and starring Angelina Jolie and John Malkovich it’s bound to be good if not great.
For some lucky people out there they will get to see this in the theaters on October 24 when the limited release rolls out. Then for the rest of us Changeling will hit the theaters on October 31. Read Theater or Renter October for more information.
Let me know what you think. Will you go to see Changeling in the theater on October 31 or rent it? If you have seen it in the theater should I go see it and why?
New York Comic Con (NYCC) announces that J. Michael Straczynski will be their Guest of Honor at the 2009 convention (scheduled for 6-8 February 2009 in New York City's Jacob Javits Convention Center). Straczynski is best known for creating the television series Babylon 5, and, more recently, writing the feature film Changeling, which premiered 24 October starring Angelina Jolie (SFScope)
I really wish I could attend, or maybe I don't. I would love to see Joe, but after all of the horror stories I heard last year about the price gouging I am not sure whether I would go or not.
I can only hope they get theri act together. Can only hope they do a better job this year.
Wired.com: J.J. Abrams makes no secret that he’s more of a Star Wars guy and not so much into Star Trek, but you two were full-tilt fans.
Orci: In terms of fandom, yeah, and Damon too is a fanatic - we’re not going to drop the ball out of ignorance. Nobody can say that we don’t know Star Trek. There might be some things we do that people could question, where they go, “I hate them for some other reasons,” but they can’t say, “They didn’t know their stuff.”
Orci: And it’s controversial to even mention Star Wars and Star Trek in the same sentence, but Alex said, “We have to bring more Star Wars into Star Trek.”
Kurtzman: (joke-coughing) Original Star Wars.
Orci: Original Star Wars. I want to feel the space, I want to feel speed and I want to feel all the things that can become a little bit lost when Star Trek becomes very stately — which I love about it , but….
Kurtzman:Star Trek is often the space equivalent of sub battles, which is what makes it unique and different from Star Wars, so you can’t blow that away, either.
Orci: It’s somewhere between that the truth lies.
Really? Again with people thinking that Star Trek is suppose to be an action series! It sounds like the new film will be, but that is not the original concept for the series.
I feel like I have to say something:
Science Fiction ≠ Action
I know this is a hard concept for some people to understand. While science fiction can have action scenes in it, one is not equal to the other.
Star Trek was intended to be a Science Fiction show, and many of their best episodes did not have any action scenes at all Like the City at the Edge of Forever.
Roddenberry wanted the show to highlight how diplomacy should be our first resort rather than violence.
Yeah, that is a great suggestion. Instead of trying to show a future that actually lives up to the ideals you have set for it, and that you are hoping your audience will also aspire to, throw all your ideals out the window and make your characters flawed and while your at it, make the future something no one will ever want to aspire to.
Less Talk, More Action
Diplomacy is overrated, lets just beat the crap out of each other for no good reason. A puerile show filled with hate and violence is better than a show that sets reason and self-control on a pedestal.
There is no way that a Star Trek with more space battles and less attempts to sit down and talk things through like grown-ups would be a bad thing (io9).
Except it would have to sell out all of its ideals in order to do it. For some people selling out seems to come easier than for others.
Ignore the Laws of Physics
Ok, Star Trek was a Science Fiction show. Science Fiction is a subgenre of Speculative Fiction where science plays and integral role in the plot, and it would not be possible to tell the story without it.
Ok, so, we take that away and Star Trek is nothing but a run of the mill Space Opera.
Have At Least One Sequence That Will Make A Good Video Game
That’s right. Think about the merchandising first. Stop thinking about the plot and the characters. Just think about the money you will make with the crappy game based on movie. (honestly, has there ever been a good one?)
Think about money, nothing but money. Nothing matters but money, and entertaining people who are so emotionally dead inside that they could not be moved by anything.
Put Uhura In A Metal Bikini At Some Point
Because, I am sure it is better to turn an important character into nothing but a vapid sex object that only hormonally brain damaged men will care about. What where they thinking trying to give women a role model to look up to. I suppose Graeme McMillan thinks that women should stay in their bikinis and not have all those pesky opinions.
IF this is the new Star Trek…
…then I know it is nothing that I want to see. My snarkiness aside, these truly are bad ideas.
If Star Trek was to be rebooted, I wish people would have listened to J Michel Straczynski and Bryce Zabel who wanted to keep the spirit of the original alive. (see there concept here)
What these people have described is not a reboot for Star Trek, but a different show with the same name.
Plus, at heart, Abrams is still more of a Star Wars guy. ''All my smart friends liked Star Trek,'' he says. ''I preferred a more visceral experience.'' Which is exactly why he accepted Paramount's offer in 2005 to develop a new Trek flick; creatively, he was engaged by the possibility of a Star Trek movie ''that grabbed me the way Star Wars did.'' That meant a bigger budget and better special effects than any previous Trek film, plus freedom to reinvent the mythos as needed. ''We have worldwide aspirations and we need to broaden [Trek's] appeal,'' says Weston. ''Doing the half-assed version of this thing wasn't going to work.''
So everyone involved in the new movie wants to see these sort of changes... Grr Argh.
It's time once again for our favorite game "Theater Or Renter?" For October we have eight movies.
