Speculative Fiction Summer Shows To Check Out

We've got 11 shows on the to check out and watch list plus four specials from the Movies, Miniseries and Monsters category.

TV Shows

True Blood: season three

  • Awesome show must see
  • Vampires done very well
  • Loved the first two seasons
  • Kind of mad at HBO for not making this at least available on iTunes yet.  It has the problem of not being decabled friendly.

June 13, at 9 p.m. on HBO.

There's more sex, blood and supernatural action as the red-hot series picks up where it left off. Sookie's man is missing, and so she's searching for Bill with a little help from vampire Eric and werewolf Alcide (Joe Manganiello). Meanwhile, Tara gets mixed up with a vampire who takes her to the dark side, and we meet Russell Edgington (Denis O'Hare), the vampire king of Mississippi. Elsewhere, Sam hunts for his birth parents and Jason finds romance with a local woman who has a secret. Look for tons of new regular, recurring and guest characters.

The Gates: series premiere

  • Concerned about the pitch it is trying too hard to be liked
  • I am kind of interested in the show
  • It sounds more like eureka with stock fantasy / Gothic characters
  • Every time I hear about the show I get the slug line "The Gates where abnormals go to be domesticated" in my head.  My hope is that I'm wrong on that
  • Eric hopes it will be like charmed.

June 20, at 10 p.m.  on ABC.

Mix Desperate Housewives with Twilight, add a drop of True Blood, and you've got The Gates. In the series, when an ex-Chicago cop becomes the new police chief of an exclusive gated community, he and his family slowly come to learn exactly how exclusive that community is. Apparently humans aren't the only creatures that want to feel safe. This community has vampires, werewolves, witches and other creatures, and they don't always play nice.

Futurama: season six

  • Love me some Futurama
  • So excited the show is back with full cast intact

June 24, at 10 p.m. on Comedy Central

Thank you, Comedy Central! The ultimate animated space ride, Futurama, is returning for 12 glorious new episodes with Fry, Bender, Leela and all the gang from the Planet Express.

Warehouse 13: season two

  • Season one rocked
  • must watch show
  • What happened to Artie? is it the pheonix artifact and who or what will pay for it
  • could they be doing a where's claudia

July 6, at 9 p.m. on SyFy

Syfy's highest-rated series returns and Artie, who appeared to have died in an explosion at the end of last season, will return in an unusual way. With the season-one finale leaving just about everyone in a tough situation, look for lots of surprises to get them back in the supernatural artifact-hunting business. This season, love will bloom and there will be a Eureka crossover with Douglas Fargo (Neil Grayston) when he installs a new Global Dynamics computer system at the warehouse. Nolan Gerard Funk joins the cast as a romantic interest for Claudia, while Lindsay Wagner and Tia Carrere guest-star.

Eureka: season four

  • great show
  • time to get our geek on again
  • Hoping that Jaime Ray Newman will come back since East Wick is gone.

July 9, at 9 p.m. on SyFy

Something big is coming that will be a major game-changer for Eureka, and it isn't just James Callis joining the cast this season. Expect an Allison/Jack/Dr. Grant (Callis) love triangle, a race to the moon, people turning into stone, and even zombies! Guest stars include Jamie Kennedy, Wil Wheaton and the return of Jaime Ray Newman and Matt Frewer.

Haven: series premiere

  • Based on Stephen King is a yellow flag
  • My hope is for it to be good but past attempts to translate his works onto the screen have meet without much success, see Dead zone and Langoliers.

July 9, at 10 p.m. on SyFy

Based on the Stephen King novella The Colorado Kid, the series centers on FBI agent Audrey Parker, played by Jericho's Emily Rose, as she arrives in the small town of Haven, Maine, to look into the murder of a local ex-con. What seems like a routine case lands her in the middle of events in the town, which is a refuge for people with a range of supernatural abilities. Haven also stars Lucas Bryant and Eric Balfour.

Ghost Hunters International: season two finishing episodes

  • Love me some Ghost Hunters

July 14, at 9 p.m. on SyFy

The GHI team is off to Nottingham, England, in the hunt for the Sherriff of Nottingham's ghost at the Galleries of Justice. Other countries they'll explore during their global adventures include Wales, Norway, Poland, Ukraine and Estonia. The team is joined by new member Scott Tepperman, as well as Ghost Hunter Academy winners Susan Slaughter and Karl Pfeiffer.

Being Human: season two

  • I want to see season one have heard good things about the show.
  • Watching this will be tricky since BBC America is not decabled friendly

July 24, at 10 p.m. on BBC America

Before Syfy can have its way with the subject matter, you can catch a second season of the BBC original with the supernatural roomies—vampire Mitchell, werewolf George and ghost Annie. In the second season, George has to deal with relationship troubles, Mitchell tries to create order within the vampire community, and Annie takes on motherhood with a baby ghost. The series moves to its regular timeslot at 9 p.m. on July 31. BBC's announced that a third season is in the works.

Movies, Miniseries and Monsters

Princess of Mars: Syfy original movie

  • Love some Barsoom book series, hoping it will at least be craptastic but with Antonio Sabato Jr. and Traci Lords in it there is no hope.

Saturday, June 5, at 9 p.m.

How about a little Edgar Rice Burroughs? This Syfy original flick adapts the Burroughs novel and takes Antonio Sabato Jr. and Traci Lords on an adventure about a U.S. soldier who is mysteriously transported to Mars in the midst of a war between two alien races.

The Phantom:  Syfy one night event

  • Four hour miniseries
  • don't know why The Phantom needed re-imagining so I hope they do well with it

June 20, at 7 p.m.

This modern-day re-imagining of the comic book follows Kit Walker (Ryan Carnes), the son of the Phantom, who ends up with his father's iconic ring. In the tale, Kit is targeted by the deadly Singh crime syndicate, who hope to stop the ascension of the next Phantom. Add in Isabella Rossellini as Lithia, the head of an experimental mind-control program, and you have one interesting miniseries. This mini was directed by The Last Templar's Paolo Barzman and stars Sandrine Holt and Cameron Goodman.

Dinocroc vs. Supergator: Syfy original movie

  • What can I say I'm a sucker for a crappy giant monster flick

June 26, at 9 p.m.

Yep, it's a Dinocroc vs. Supergator smackdown a la Roger Corman! The two massive critters escape an experimental facility (which happens to be on a lush tropical island) and begin rampaging toward populated beaches filled with tourists. While the creatures work up an appetite battling each other, there are plenty of tourists around to snack on to keep them going.

Futurama: Planet Express "Voice Cast" is Back

futurama-benderGood news everyone!

"The five stars -- John DiMaggio, Billy West, Katey Sagal, Maurice LaMarche and Tress MacNeille -- finally sealed pacts late Friday with 20th Century Fox TV to return to the show.the new episodes in mid-2010."

This is great news for me I love Futurama and would be saddened if the staff of planet express did not sound like themselves.  Imagine the shock if a deep husky voice tried to tell the audience to "Bite my shiny metal ass."  or say his most favored word "Pimpmobile".

New episodes are planned to air mid-season 2010.

Praise the Robot Devil, Futurama may return to TV

Here I come Future

The fourth and final Futurama movie, Into the Wild Green Yonder, is out on the 24th, but it just might not be the last we see of Fry, Leela, and all the rest. At a recent con, voice actor Billy West mentioned that DVD sales and Comedy Central ratings have led Fox to consider picking Futurama back up for another season (Popsucker).

This is the barest hint of a wisp of rumor, but maybe if we all call on the powers of the Robot Devil, we can get Futurama back.

Other than continuing to support the DVDs, I am not sure there is all that much we can do to make this happen.  I hope Billy West knows something we don’t.

Review of Futurama: Benders Game

Review of: Futurama: Bender’s Game Overall Rating: 9

Futurama: Bender’s Game is another great movie in the series I found myself laughing through the whole movie.  They maintain the same humor that I have come to know and love from the TV series and the subsequent movies.

The opening is hilarious starting with the very important message “The flames in your TV aren’t part of the show.”  We then went on a trippy sergeant Pepper band style of ride.

In this mad capped adventure we get to learn the secret behind the feud between Farnsworth and Dr. Ogden Wernstrom.  We also get to confirm that the space pope IS reptilian.  Futurama: Bender’s Game is definitely an owner.  Watch the trailer here in the P:S HQ

Best Phrases

  1. Great Godzilla's gonads
  2. The evil I could tolerate but the stupidity…
  3. Your laugh is so infectious.  So is herpes!
  4. Do-deca-licious
  5. Eat the wizard, eat the slut, eat the robot shiny butt.

DVD Releases: November 4th, 2008

  • TenaciousDmasterworks2 The Complete Master Works 2:  over 3 hours of Tenacious D goodness!!! Hilarious, brilliantly irreverent music from both their old stuff and from The Pick of Destiny.  The set list for the live concert has over 22 tracks and several videos.
  • Futurama: Bender's Game:  The third out of the new Futurama direct to DVD movies.  I loved the first two and hold high expectations for this one as well.  I was disappointed when they raised the prices on The Beast with a Billion Backs $23.99 but now it looks like at $17.99 they are moving back toward the $15.99 price point which I think is a better one.  For more read Bender’s Game Now With Dungeons & Dragons.
  • Get Smart (2 Disc Special Edition):  I loved this movie gave it a 9.5 out of 10, it’s a definite owner.  Exploring: Get Smart
  • Get Smart - The Complete Series Gift Set:  All five seasons of the classic series!!! this show was great, a classic example of television comedy.  I have the first season and can’t stop watching it.  The entire series of Get Smart is a must own.
  • Kung Fu Panda Two - Pack (Kung Fu Panda Widescreen Edition + Secrets of the Furious Five):  This movie got great reviews and going to the top of my rent list, probably a must own.
  • Primeval: Seasons 1 & 2:  Thanks to an unexplained wrinkle in time, prehistoric creatures are running amok through the modern age, prompting evolutionary zoologist Nick Cutter to spring into action. With his small team of experts, Cutter takes on the anachronistic beasts and tries to keep a global crisis at bay. But the sudden reappearance of his wife, whom he long believed to be dead, only adds another piece to a very complicated puzzle.  I’ve heard some good things about this series and will have to put it onto my rent list.
  • Reaper: Season 1:  On his 21st birthday, lifelong slacker Sam is confronted by Satan and forced to become a bounty hunter who captures souls escaped from hell. With the help of his clumsy friends, Sam takes on the challenge of sending evildoers back where they belong. I’ve heard some good things about this series and will also have to put it onto my rent list.

Headlings for August 21th

Here are some quick headlines for August 20th:

  • Review: Dark Passion Play by Nightwish | dashPunk - To be honest, I could not imagine the band without Tarja, but this album put all of my fears to rest and made me fall in love with Nightwish is a deeper way than I had ever believed possible.

Bender's Game Now With Dungeons & Dragons

Bender's_Game Futurama: Bender's Game is the third in the direct to DVD Futurama movies. It will be out November 4, 2008 and include guest stars George Takei and Rich Little playing themselves. Watch the trailer in the Project: Shadow HQ it looks hilarious

The crew of Planet Express sets off to infiltrate the universes only dark-matter mine.  While in the mine they discover a midevil land with Dungeons and Dragons in it.  Bender plays the roll of a knight, the Professor is a Wizard, Leela is a centaur, Amy is the queen of the water nymphos.  I am concerned that they will release it at around the $25 price point instead of at he $15 price point and thus hurt the sales numbers.  That being said I'm still excited to see it.

Futurama's Billion Backed Beast

futurama_billion_backed_beastThe second of the four direct to DVD Futurama movies will be released on June 24, 2008. Titled "The Beast with a Billion Backs". I love Futurama and am glad that they are doing these direct to DVD movies. Benders Big Score was brilliant, see our review here.

The Beast With A Billion Backs is set to follow the events of Benders Big Score where a planetary sized alien enters into our universe. If they continue the plan where in the first movie Bender was the main character this one should have Turanga Leela as the main character. I hope that the third one will feature "The Velour Fog" himself Zapp Brannigan.

The DVD is available for on Amazon for $19.99.

Futurama Bender's Big Score

5 I instantly became giddy when I saw the UPS man pull up to the house with the package today. I knew that small envelope contained the first new Futurama I would get to watch in two long Bender-less years. The packaging is great. The hologram of Bender belching as Fry, Leela, Hermes' Head and Dr Zoidberg cower in fear is still making me giggle as I write this.

We actually started with a special feature. They produced an actual full length episode of "Everybody Love Hypnotoad." I have to say, Master Hypnotoad is the greatest thing ever put on a DVD. In fact, they should release another DVD with nothing but the glorious and wise Hypnotoad.

Cover of "Futurama - Bender's Big Score" Cover of Futurama - Bender's Big Score

After we broke free from our benevolent amphibious lord's gaze, we started the feature.

Bender's Big Score begins with the crew being fired because they had been canceled by the Box Corporation two years ago and no one had bothered to tell them. The numerous insults and jabs thrown at Fox were welcomed and well placed, as was Hermes Conrad's unfortunate decapitation.

The story is simple, and classic Futurama. People are essentially stupid, and all of earth falls victim to numerous cheesy fishing scams run by three evil space nudists. It is soon discovered that Fry has the secret code to unlock time travel tattooed on his buttock. Bender, who is under the control of the evil space nudists is then sent back in time to steal for them, even though each trip threatens to rip the fabric of space-time asunder.

Every character from Futurama makes an appearance in this flick with the exception of the back water asteroid space chicken. There is even a musical number performed by Santa, Hanukah Zombie, and Kwanzaa-bot.

A great movie filled with humor and even the moving emotional scenes that we have come to expect from this great series. Along the way, many of the mysteries of the original four seasons are answered, and new mysteries are brought to the fore.

I am a huge Futurama fan, and this was more than I could have expected out of a Futurama movie. Al Gore was hilarious as always. For those of you that are not fans of the series, I think the humor is wild enough to tickle even your funny bone, so give it a try. This is a five star buyer for me. I will be rewatching it often. By the way, the Terrifying Message from Al Gore special feature is hilarious, but I would expect nothing less from the Emperor of the Moon. Buy your copy (here) now!
